Reading at home

Reading at Stoke Damerel Primary Academy

Foundation Stage and Key Stage One

"Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." — Kate DiCamillo

Reading is at the heart of learning at Stoke Damerel Primary Academy.

Reading at home is an integral part of a child’s learning journey.

Your child will bring home two books:

1. A Book Bag Book – this links directly to what they have learnt in class in Read, Write Inc. The sound they have focused on is on the front.

This should be read 3 times in the week:

The first read – decoding the words. Start by talking about the cover and title of the book – what do you think it will be about?

The second read – becoming more confident.

The third read – reading should be more fluent and the questions in the book can be talked about.

2. A Library Book to share

This is a book to share and read with your child, unless they are confident enough to read it to you.

Fiction Books

Talk about the words – do they know the meaning?

What is the book about?

Talk about patterns in the book – repeated words or phrases.

Talk about the characters.

Did they like it?

Non-fiction books

Look at the layout – how is it different to a fiction book? Look at the contents, index and glossary (if it has them) and what these are for.

What did they learn / find interesting?

Reading Rewards

Your child has a Reading Reward Log in their Reading Record. Please complete this every time your child reads.

They can earn a sticker EVERY time they read a book so if they read the book three times that is three stickers.

If they read other books at home these can be included as well.

For every 18 stickers they can earn a certificate:

Bronze Silver Gold Platinum

When they achieve their Gold Certificate then they receive a free book.

Once they achieve their Platinum Certificate they become a School Reading Ambassador.

Reading Ambassadors are responsible for promoting reading across the school.

Reading Eggs

In addition to Reading Books, each child has a login for Reading Eggs. This is a great way of children developing their reading skills.

When they first log on they do an assessment to correctly place them on the programme. They can then work through it at their own pace. As they progress, they earn Reading Egg Rewards.

The children should log on to Reading Eggs every week.

Reading Eggspress

Reading Eggspress is part of Reading Eggs.

Each Friday your child will be set a Reading Task for homework. They should click on the Reading Eggspress icon on the home page to access this.
